Interview with Mark Jenkins,
CEO, Petersen Inc.
Q: Why do customers choose to work with Petersen Inc.?
A: Petersen Inc. has an incredibly strong reputation for high quality work and on time delivery. The majority of our work comes from repeat customers with repeat products. These customers know what to expect when they do business with Petersen Inc. and this results in customers coming back again and again. We take pride in delivering world class products to our customers to ensure that they meet their goals.
Q: What is the most exciting project you’ve seen come through?
A: Wow, that is a tough question as we have built some amazing products over the years. These products include tunnel boring machines, amusement park rides (Jimmy Fallon – Universal Studios Florida, Cannibal – Lagoon), large vessels for oil and gas industry (21’ wide by 300’ long & over 240,000 pounds; shipped from Farr West, Utah to Illinois, you don’t want to get stuck behind one of these on the freeway!), and nuclear processing equipment to name just a few. It’s hard to pick the most exciting project. I walk through our plant every day and I am amazed at some of the products we manufacture.
Q: What are some of the ways Petersen Inc. engages with the Ogden-Weber community?
A: Every day at Petersen Inc. we are working on our culture which we call “The Petersen Way.” The Petersen Way is focused in three areas; taking care of our customers with world class products and processes, taking care of our employees and their families and giving back to our local communities. Each quarter we have activities that allow our employees to give back to the community that we live in. These projects have included food donations to the food bank, providing backpacks and supplies for children through YCC, providing coats and warm clothing to the Lantern House, planting flowers and shrubs for the Ogden Nature Center, annual United Way campaigns and many more projects. We feel it is extremely important to give back and provide our employees the opportunity to serve our local NPO’s and community.
Q: What are some obstacles Petersen Inc. has overcome?
A: We are constantly looking for skilled welders and machinists along with many other key positions. I’m not sure that we have completely “overcome” this hiring challenge but we are striving every day to bring on qualified employees and provide growth, learning and skill development opportunities for our existing employees. We have a scholarship program at Petersen Inc. that provides financial support for our employees and/or members of their families to further their skill and education at local tech colleges and universities. If you’re reading this and you’re thinking your skill set fits, then check out our website at Peterseninc.com and let’s talk!
Q: What is something that people might be surprised to learn about Petersen Inc.?
A: Petersen Inc. is actually an employee owned company. The Petersen family started Petersen Inc. over 55 years ago and in 2010, the family sold the business to the employees. Each year employee participants are given shares of company stock that are theirs to keep and they are then able to help grow the value of these shares. Over the years this can add up and help provide a significant supplement to their retirement. Having employees as owners provides a unique perspective as they realize that their everyday efforts and contributions will have a direct effect on the success of the company AND their retirement account.
Q: What is the vision for the future at Petersen Inc.?
A: The future is bright for Petersen Inc. and our employees. We expect continued growth in all of our existing industries. One of the strengths of our backlog is the diversification of industries that we work in. We continue to look for new opportunities in potentially new industries. If you walk the floors of Petersen Inc. you will see the following slogan throughout our plants: “We must develop a culture where change is expected, embraced and rewarded and complacency and casualness are vigorously attacked!” To that point, we look forward to the challenges and changes that will inevitably be part of our future; we’re preparing every day to be ready!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A: The most important factor that makes Petersen Inc. the company that it is today are the men and women that walk through our doors and give their best efforts each and every day. Our team members are amazing. They are some of the most talented, resourceful and dedicated people I have ever known. It’s a privilege for me to be associated with them and to be able to work together to build some incredible products and continue to reach remarkable milestones!
