Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll – April Edition

OGDEN, UT – Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll is scheduled for April 3, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Activity locations include Union Station, Historic 25th Street, The Junction, Newgate Mall, and Washington Boulevard, with more to explore each month.

The Marshall White Community Center will host a pop-up exhibition as part of the Art Stroll, featuring pottery created by both students and instructors. This showcases the talent and creativity fostered with the community. This offers attendees the opportunity to view the ceramic collection.

Ogden City’s First Friday Art Stroll continues to grow, with new venues regularly joining the lineup. Many local artists have made their debut at the stroll, showcasing their very first exhibits and finding a supportive audience here in our community. We’re proud to feature fresh talent while celebrating established creatives, together building a vibrant downtown arts scene.

Physical maps are available at any stop on the stroll or at The Corner, the small white kiosk located at 25th and Washington Avenue. It is open during the stroll and will be open until 9 p.m. The map includes all OGX stop locations, and the OGX is free to ride, making it easy and fun to get around downtown Ogden.

As always, community members are encouraged to share their experience using the hashtag #OgdenSharesArt about personal creations or inspiring images of arts and culture with the Ogden Arts Community. Using the hashtag as a virtual option provides an avenue to engage with other artists in Ogden and see the exciting artworks being created.

On Solid Ground – New art sculpture on 25th Street, across the street from The Monarch.

November’s art stroll will unveil On Solid Ground, a striking new art sculpture in the Nine Rails Creative District. Located on 25th Street across from The Monarch, this sculptural work celebrates the deep roots and enduring spirit of Ogden, where history and creativity meet beneath our feet.

In 2021, construction crews uncovered a remarkable piece of Ogden’s past: original rails from the city’s historic streetcar system, which once connected neighborhoods and powered progress from 1900 to 1936. Rather than covering this discovery back up, a few community members chose to celebrate it. Those very rails, unearthed just a few feet from where they now stand, became the foundation of On Solid Ground.

Created by local artists Samantha Killinen and Hannah Scalambrino, working together as the IHTS Collective, the sculpture honors Ogden’s heritage while looking toward its future. The design draws inspiration from the city’s distinctive architecture, the strength of the surrounding mountains, and the industrious honeybee, a nod to the hardworking people who make Ogden such a vibrant place to live, work, and create.

Part of the city’s ongoing effort to infuse art into public spaces, On Solid Ground adds to the growing collection of works within the Nine Rails Creative District, where creativity drives community connection. The installation stands as both a tribute and a time capsule, reminding us that even as Ogden evolves, its foundation remains, quite literally, on solid ground.

Our featured artist is Haunting Beauty (Smith and Shani)

Instagram: haunting.beauty.801

Bio: Smith is the artist and curator of Haunting Beauty. Informed by a formal background in Zoology, Smith translates scientific fascination into artistic expression through sustainably sourced insect taxidermy and jewelry crafted from bone and wing. This appreciation for the natural world also takes a playful turn in Smith’s drawings and stickers. Beyond these creations, Smith curates a collection of antiques and curiosities designed to bring a sense of wonder to the modern collector. Haunting Beauty wouldn’t be possible without Shani. Shani is the “Igor” to Smith’s “Dr. Frankenstein” and the essential ears of the operation (acting like a seeing-eye dog, but for hearing) to make sure Smith stays tuned into the world. When she isn’t busy being the “hearing-eye human”, her own stunning beaded insects and witchcraft ritual items make a guest appearance, proving that every mad scientist needs a multi-talented sidekick.”

This Was Water is an interactive sculpture, sound, and video installation. The sculptures are modeled after the gypsum crystals, or “dirty diamonds”, that emerge through the salty crust at the Great Salt Lake. The lake is drying up at unsustainable rates due to water consumption and climate change. As the water’s edge recedes, the clay lakebed is exposed. The crystals form in the land that misses water. The crystals form so rapidly (in geologic time) that they capture the surrounding clay and tar which muddies the transparent crystals–hence the name “dirty diamonds.”

Recent studies by Dr. Bonnie Baxter and student Paulina Martinez-Koury suggest that the crystals are teeming with microbial life. Metaphorically, Bornhoft and Campbell imagine the crystals as vestiges of the drying lake. These beautiful artifacts foretell dire consequences. Toxic metals such as arsenic and mercury also rest in the lakebed. As the lake continues to lose water, we risk the toxins becoming airborne and poisoning all living beings in proximity to the lake. Each of the sculpture rock mounds is fitted with lidar sensors, lights, and speakers that respond to a person’s presence. Lights inside the sculptures also flicker as someone approaches. The interactive elements evoke the lively matter that animates these geological phenomena. This multimedia installation invites reflection upon our relationship with this fascinating and fragile inland sea.

Eccles Art Center

The Eccles Art Center invites the community to experience a dynamic and inspiring lineup of exhibitions this April, celebrating both emerging student artists and contemporary abstract work. The Main Gallery will feature the Weber School District Junior High and High School Show, a highly anticipated annual exhibition showcasing a wide range of artwork created by students across Weber County. From painting and drawing to sculpture and mixed media, the exhibit highlights the creativity, technical skill, and fresh perspectives of young artists at pivotal stages in their development. In the Carriage House Gallery, the Ogden School District Junior High and High School Show will present an equally compelling collection of student work. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the talent being cultivated in Ogden’s schools, emphasizing experimentation, self-expression, and the importance of arts education in shaping confident, creative individuals.

Adding to the evening’s programming, Studio 2580 will host a special one-night-only exhibition on Friday, April 3, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., featuring artist Tyson DeForest. His exhibit, Liminal Horizons: Abstracts of Home, is an intimate collection of 25 to 30 oil paintings that explores abstract landscapes and personal sanctuaries. Blending structure with dreamlike horizons, DeForest’s paintings reflect the emotional spaces between memory, imagination, and the idea of home—inviting viewers to pause, connect, and discover the sense of home we each carry within.

All exhibitions will open during the First Friday Art Stroll on April 3 with a public reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The student exhibitions will remain on display through the month of April, offering visitors multiple opportunities to experience the breadth of talent.

The Eccles Art Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.ogden4arts.org or contact the Eccles Art Center at (801) 392-6935

Gallery 25

Gallery 25’s featured artist for April will be Roberta Glidden. Her website is www.robertaglidden.com

I have studied with many local masters, both in northern Utah and in Jackson Hole, which offers a stunning range of landscapes year-round.

The emphasis has been on on-site or plein-air studies using oil paint. The small studies are then developed and expanded in a studio setting. Working directly from nature gives me the most accurate colors and values, along with the excitement of being outdoors in the wind and the constantly changing light.

From Jackson Hole, I have access to Grand Teton National Park, and from Ogden, access to the Wasatch Range, along with famous desert cliffs, canyons, and rivers.

In Jackson Hole, I have taken part in the June Plein Air event for the Wildlife Art Museum. In Ogden, I have been a long-time member/owner of Gallery 25 on Historic 25th Street.

Lately, I have been using loose acrylic paints applied entirely with a palette knife. The result is a more abstract view with all sorts of surprises for both the painter and the viewer. This method better represents the actual, constantly shifting way we experience nature.

Shaw Gallery at Weber State University

On display Jan. 23 – Apr. 3, 2026, at Shaw Gallery in the Kimball Arts Building (WSU Ogden Campus).

Animals and humans have always migrated: for different climates, for opportunities, for safety, for love; for necessity and curiosity. For humans, political borders and the laws governing political states are perpetually shifting. Our current concerns about im/migration are not new. The nuance of real lives and specific places gets erased in times of polemical rhetoric. This group exhibition brings together perspectives from artists whose work addresses the beauty and complexities of human migration. In the end, we are all just passing through different spaces on the same planet.

The House Cat – NEW LOCATION

Artist Name: Emalie (Lem) Ball
Bio: Lemon Zest Studio — where art loves louder than the noise.
Hi, I’m Lem, a multi-passionate artist and muralist from Smithfield, Utah. I create bubbly, colorful, zesty works that blend paint, drawing, illustration, and mixed media. My style draws from energy, nature, astrology, the human psyche, and self-healing—turning portraits, animals, florals, landscapes, abstracts, or anything meaningful into vibrant art.
I fell in love with large-scale work in 2013 at the Kayenta Street Art Festival with my dad, Jay Ball. We earned awards, became featured artists, and later brought chalk art to our community. Today, I paint bold, floral, animal, and nature-inspired abstract murals for businesses using acrylics on walls, buildings, vehicles, and more.
Lemon Zest Art is about authentic creation, genuine connections, collaboration, and inspiring others to express freely. Art is love made visible—let’s connect and create something beautiful together!

Opening Doors to Emotions”

Union Station Grand Lobby

On special display 3/26 to 4/4

“Opening Doors to Emotions” is a community art display created by the students of Waterfall Canyon Academy, a residential treatment center in Ogden, Utah, that serves adolescents and young adults navigating social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. As part of their therapeutic journey, students were invited to identify the emotions they were feeling, locate them on an emotions color wheel, and select the corresponding acrylic paint color. They would then fill a reusable water balloon with that color and throw it at the door, letting it splatter and take shape. The result is five vivid, one-of-a-kind doors, each a physical expression of something real and felt. We invite the community to stop, look closely, and consider the story behind each door and the courage it took to name their feelings and release them into something artistic.

Palette Club Art Show 2026

“83 Years of Painting – Modern Artists and a Historical Retrospective”

ENDURING LEGACY

Palette Club of Ogden is a longstanding group of artists that has met monthly since 1943 when twenty-one artists met to advance community interest in art and to encourage local artists to expand their talents. Our club continues today, open to artists of all skill levels and mediums. Monthly meetings feature art demonstrations and lectures, field trips, and paint outs (plein air gatherings where the group creates art together in the open air).

CAMARADERIE AND SUPPORT

Although members of Palette Club of Ogden have cycled in and out of our group over the years, our commitment to cohesion and collaboration as a community remains strong. Regular meet-ups provide support for both burgeoning and experienced artists and also meaningful friendships.

FINE ART FOCUSED, CLASSICAL & MODERN INTERPRETATIONS

Think of our exhibit as one of “Faces, Places, and Imaginative Spaces” — masterful paintings with thoughtful composition, vibrant and interesting color palettes, a variety of sizes, and most of all, exquisite technique! Our group is comprised mainly of traditional artists who tirelessly work to master our respective materials, following in the footsteps of the classic masters. Our mediums include oil, acrylic, and watercolor, either as stand-alone mediums or incorporated with mixed media elements for added texture and interest. While we frequently use traditional materials in classic ways, there is always room for experimentation and development of each individual’s artistic voice. As we see beauty all around us, we gravitate toward what inspires us and are driven to paint and portray it in our unique, individual styles.

The Community Art Show Food Exhibit will be on display in the Grand Lobby, featuring artwork created by local community members. Attendees are encouraged to view the exhibit and participate by voting for the Community Favorite between 6 and 8 p.m.

Brey Avery will be our Artist for April.

Bio:I am a local endurance enthusiast/artist. I am a trail runner, mountain biker, and swimmer. I love running and biking along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail year-round, and swimming in Pineview during the summer.

I love to paint the places I see on my outings. I also use reference photos from my friends and adventures. My preferred medium for my landscape paintings is Oil on plywood or canvas. The painting is relatively new for me, and I would love to see it take off! I have some prints already and can make prints of most of what I have already done. I can do commissions if you have a reference photo, or, if it’s a local trail, chances are I have a pic of the notable sights! I also make most of my own frames.
