Intergenerational Poverty Initiative

Greetings from the Leadership Northern Utah class of 2017-2018!

Leadership Northern Utah (LNU) is a year-long program that offers individuals from our community an opportunity to work together to develop leadership skills and to apply them where our community benefits most.

Normally LNU chooses a large project that can be successfully completed within the LNU program year. This year our group has chosen a long-term, sustainable project and we are asking for your support to fund the Pilot year of the program. The LNU Class of 2018, in partnership with Weber County, developed a program to address Intergenerational Poverty (IGP) in Weber County. IGP is defined as the cycle of poverty where at least one member of the family has been a recipient of a full year of public assistance, both as a child and as an adult. Today, we have 7,500 IGP children in Weber County and this number will only grow without effective interventions. To address the issue, LNU and Weber County developed the Career Path Partnership Pilot Program (C3P).  This project develops a workforce pipeline for workers consisting of our most vulnerable IGP neighbors and matches them with employers with specific labor needs.

We would like for your organization to be a part of this exciting pilot project. The program will identify IGP transitioning students or parents from the neighborhood with the highest concentration of IGP families and provide employability training to program participants. This will facilitate a pathway to employment for them and will provide workers to local businesses. This pathway includes support to the partnering employers by providing IGP participants with skills development and any assistance they may need to be successful. This assistance could include support services for employability barriers, providing required clothing or tools for employment, etc.

We invite your company to participate by providing any one or more of the following:

  • Work-based learning opportunities
  • Internships
  • Career path development opportunities
  • Financial sponsorship of the program

By participating, you will receive the following

  • Access to an untapped workforce
  • A career advocate who serves as the main point of contact
  • The many benefits that come with improved community and economic prosperity

Please join us in creating opportunities for these individuals either through a work-based opportunity or a financial contribution. Intergenerational poverty is a problem for our whole community, not just the people who live in the cycle. When individuals are able to break the cycle of poverty, our entire community benefits.
