It is an honor to be nominated for the Ogden Weber Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year award, and I am grateful for the many diverse opportunities I’ve been given to serve as a volunteer.
Through various service organizations such as the Ogden Breakfast Exchange and the Rotary Club of Ogden, I have helped raise money to provide shoes for disadvantaged children, clean up the Ogden River Park Way, serve as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, volunteer with Community Christmas in organizing gift distribution to families in need, organize the assembly of Pantry Packs and Meals in a Bag for Catholic Community Services, as well as helped deliver dictionaries to every 3rd grade student in Weber County (this includes Ogden and Weber School Districts as well as Charter Schools.) In addition, I have served as a Spiker for two years, welcoming new businesses to our community. I am now in my sixth year serving on the Women in Business board where I have the opportunity to lift and empower women to see their potential so that they feel prepared, supported, and capable to be leaders in our community. These positions have allowed for new, sometimes difficult, experiences that have provided tremendous personal growth. I feel that serving as a volunteer has benefited me more than those I am helping. I am beyond blessed that I have been given these opportunities.
Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, once said, “Every day I ask myself the same questions: What have I done? Is it enough? Does it justify all that I want to do…”? I often think of his words and ask myself the same questions when I am feeling overwhelmed with all the “things” on my plate. I have learned that if I give more than I take, support others and my community, my life and the lives of those around me are better!
This is why I serve!

As an Air Force member, my family and I moved to Utah in 1991. I retired from the Air Force in 1994 and decided to make Utah our home. My wife and I are currently raising our two grandkids, Breannah 15 and my grandson Bentley 13. We have and are involved in several activities in our community. As a chamber member I have served as a vice chair and chair person of my contact group. I was nominated to be a member of the prestigious Spikers group as an ambassador for the chamber which I accepted honorably. I currently serve as a member of the small business council board. I volunteer to personally deliver chambers appreciation packages to members throughout the valley. It was so uplifting to meet and get to know other small business owners and to let them know that we are here for them especially during this time of uncertainty. I have catered to chamber members who are experiencing physical challenges, transporting them to and from chamber events. As a member of the facility ministry for my church I was instrumental in distributing over 250 boxes of food to families in need in our community for Thanksgiving. The gratitude that they expressed was amazing and being able to bring joy to others especially during the holidays is a moment I will always cherish. My family and I are blessed and a blessing is never only about you, it is always intended to include you, but it is also intended to go through you to others. I believe we are here to serve, not to be served.

I have had the great opportunity to volunteer on several projects in our community. I have lead the Make a Difference day projects for McKay-Dee Hospital and helping with the employee food drive at Thanksgiving is always amazing to see how our employees support each other and the surplus food is donated to the Salvation Army. I currently serve as the Chairman of the Ogden Salvation Army Advisory Board this is my 10 year volunteering with them. This has given me the opportunity to see up-close the needs in our community and to try to help our neighbors that need assistance. The Angel Tree program that the Salvation Army runs for over 1100 children each year at Christmas time is a huge program that makes a difference right here in our community. I believe that everyone can benefit from volunteering for a worthy organization. Giving back to the community that has given so much to me is so important. Ogden is my home and I will continue to find ways to support this community.
Additional Boards that I have recently served on include the Weber County Fair Board, Weber State University Wild Cat Club, Ogden Weber Chamber Board, Spikers, Leadership Academy. It is only because of the great support I receive from Intermountain HealthCare that I can serve in the community.

Mother Teresa said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”
If service and support are considered volunteering, then count me in. I love to share my time, energy, talents and money wherever I’m needed. From the CCS Backpack Bonanza to volunteering my time at The Christmas Box House or purchasing silent auction baskets and Christmas Trees at the Christmas Tree Jubilee, I’ll do anything I can for others. There is rarely, if ever, a cause close to my heart or a cause of someone close to me that I’m unwilling to donate my time, energy or money to.
One thing I know for sure is that life is hard, and we all do the best we can. Any time I have a chance to quietly help and uplift others, I’ll do it. I serve in a lot of non-traditional ways. Like most, I give to many organizations, but am also dedicated to the wellbeing of others through my own functions such as “Favorite Things” parties or “Girls Night Out” in which we get together to simply celebrate the best parts of our lives and uplift each other. Sometimes, ordinary people are forgotten, and I work to make sure that everyone around me is not only noticed but served as well. With gatherings, thank you notes, small gifts, and simple messages, I strive to remember the good in everyone.
This year I was actively involved in a number of Chamber related events, including Women in Business Networking, Women in Business luncheons, and as a Spiker ambassador. I served as Chair of Contacts 1 networking this year, and Contacts 1 Vice Chair last year, Chair the ATHENA Leadership Award Luncheon and Ceremony, Vice Chair the Women in Businesscommittee, serve on the Women Empowered Conference Committee tracking finances and collecting swag, as well as supporting the Early BIRD Business Primer, Nubiz, and Business After Hours. I love all the people I get to frequently rub shoulders with, and I’m the one benefitting from my associations with our fantastic community!
